February - American Heart Month
February’s Health Awareness Fact Sheet: A heart attack occurs about every 40 seconds in the United States and happens when blood flow to the heart is severely reduced or blocked due to narrowed arteries caused by fat and cholesterol buildup. Although heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, many women misinterpret heart attack symptoms as less serious conditions because the signs can be subtle or confusing. Common symptoms include chest pressure or pain, discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, shortness of breath, nausea, cold sweats, lightheadedness, unusual fatigue, and anxiety. Because these symptoms may not always be obvious, delaying medical help can be deadly, making it critical to call 911 immediately if warning signs appear. Heart disease is largely preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. Prevention steps include regular medical checkups to understand personal risk, quitting smoking, staying physically active, and maintaining a balanced diet. Adults should aim for regular aerobic exercise and strength training each week while focusing on meals rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Limiting processed foods, added sugars, sodium, and alcohol can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and support overall heart health. Please follow up and schedule an appointment with your licensed provider to assess any risk factors that you may have.
